First of all, when you join a server, after you fill in that crappy 'can you roleplay' /form/, you will be greeted to make a new character, this character of yours can be anything as long as it abides to both the rules of the server AND the laws of the Union, in the lore, there is a maximum hight (Usually 6'3 or higher, may change depending on server) So your character can't be a 7ft tall giant, UNLESS something has happened IC'ly to cause this. You also need a name, names of characters inside HL2 are not allowed (Gordan Freeman, Alyx Vance, and so on), your name should not be anything rude or offencive (So no Muhamed Hu Islam or some shit) A Name is a NAME, for instance your IRL name, you can use that, I use my first name, Morgan for one of my characters (No my IRL name is not Morgan Claxton....). Your Description should follow nicely, showing almost everything about you, HOWEVER your description must not show your personality/traits for instance 'Hates Combine' or 'Tripple Backflip', for instance a good description would be: 5'9|ShortMessyHair|Citizen'sJumpsuit|HazelEyes|MediumBuild|CIDTags|BlueLoyalistArmband|9mm(Hidden). If you have a weapon, You have to have it on your desc, if it is hidden add [Hidden] Or something like that, please note you can also add IC weapons, if you have IC'ly crafted them and got permission for it (SAs admins etc said you can), remember if the [Hidden] Tag ain't there, Everyone Can see it, if you carry a weapon larger than a compact SMG it can be seen easily (So no Hidden Shotguns or AR2s, Ar2s are hard to hide ya' know...).
Secondly. How to play as a normal citizen.
Now your new to this city, so your not going to know all the sewers tunnels, and unless your char has IC knowledge of people or something like that, he won't know certain things, knowing things your char shouldn't know is classified as meta game, for instance someone saying "Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep" In OOC, and you instantly hiding, that is metagame, yes it is hard, but you need to control your actions, OOC is OUT OF CHARACTER, IC Is IN CHARACTER, so unless IRL you have this small chatbox in the lower left of your eye (Which if you do, that's Frickin' awesome) You won't know what is going on.
Third. Rebels, Loyalists, Plain old Civi, which one do you choose?
Rebels: Die faster, usually get caught, and killed more (Lets in percentage, about 75% of a PK)
Loyalists: Sometimes get attacked (25% and that's not just because they are loyalists, but because of chance), are treated with more respect, get more benefits, and are counted as a benefactor (25% of PK) Rarely attacked.
Citizens: 50% of attack/PK, you wander to the wrong place, get attacked, get killed, citizen's are malnourished people, they can't do ninja kicks, roundhouses and parkour along the sidelines.
Tbh I would pick Loyalism, just because of the benefits, Rebels get more 'danger close' RP, while loyalism get's a slow paced fun time.
Fourth: Abilities/Skills, your char when you start may be able to do a certain thing fairly well, it matters what your char did in his pass life, before the Combine. For instance some of my chars are good technicians or scientists, due to their time in Oxford or so on. Your char may of been a retired boxer, so he can do some basic fighting. But remember you are still slightly malnourished. So you can't be a ninja 24/7.
Last of all: Slang, terms etc. When you start, you wouldn't call a vortigaunt, a vortigaunt, you'd call it by what you know and hear they are called, Biotics, 'Combine' is just a slang most people use, 'Universal Union' is the better way to say it, or 'Union'/'UU', saying 'Combine!' when a CP is around, can get you beaten or worse, detained. Although your character can IC'ly be racist, if it is taken overboard (N*** N*** N*** I'm 100% N****) That's just plain OOC racism, which can lead to your kick or ban.
